Welcome to Youghal, an official family friendly and heritage town! The picturesque town of Youghal occupies a commanding position at the estuary of the river Blackwater. The town grew up along a strip of flat land beside the river where there was good access to the water at a defensible site. The earliest settlements in the Youghal area were probably small religious foundations. Just west of the present town is the oratory at Kilcoran which may have been associated with the important monastery at Ardmore, 11km (7 miles) east of Youghal.
Vikings clearly had a good eye for selecting spots to settle on as they chose Youghal as their base – maybe they too wanted a place with sandy beaches!
Youghal’s history goes beyond that of the vikings though, right back to the 5th Century when St. Coran’s Church was built. Today, many of it’s ancient buildings survive, including St. Mary’s Collegiate Church and the impressive town walls – the longest town walls in the Republic!
As a family friendly town, Youghal offers a wide mix of activities for all the family – history, beaches, entertainment, nature, fishing, golf, walking, boating, arts & culture, spas and swimming pools to name just a few! Located half way between Waterford and Cork City, Youghal is the ideal holiday base from which to explore the south of Ireland and its many hidden gems.
